Will my SSI check come early in December 2023?

SSI benefits are paid on the 1st of each month, with some exceptions.

December 2023 benefits will be paid on Friday, Dec. 01, 2023.

Exceptions

There can be payment exceptions if the payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday.

Federal Holiday Exception: If your SSDI payment date lands on a Federal holiday, benefits will be paid one day earlier.

Weekend Exception: For SSI payments, if the 1st of the month lands on a weekend, the SSI payment will be sent on the previous business day. This means that sometimes you can receive two SSI payments in the same month (and the next month will be skipped).

Claims Filed Before May 1997: Recipients who filed for benefits before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of each month. For this group, the birth date is not used to determine the payment date.

Receiving Both SSDI and SSI: If you are receiving both SSDI and SSI, your SSDI benefit is paid on the 3rd of the month, and your SSI payment is paid on the 1st.

What day is my December 2023 payment?

Let’s take a look at the payment dates for December 2023 and see if there are any upcoming exceptions caused by weekends or holidays. This month, SSI recipients will receive two payments since Jan. 1st is a federal holiday.

Dec. 01: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is paid on the first of each month. You can expect your SSI payment to arrive on Friday, Dec. 01, 2023.

Dec. 01 (early payment): This month, Dec. 03 lands on a weekend, so SSDI benefits will be paid on Friday, Dec. 01, 2023 instead.

There are two groups that receive SSDI payments on the 3rd of each month:

  • Beneficiaries who filed a claim before May 1997
  • Beneficiaries who receive both SSDI and SSI

All other beneficiaries are assigned a payment day based on their birth date.

Dec. 13: If your birthday falls between the 1st – 10th of the month, you can expect your payment on Dec. 13, which is the 2nd Wednesday of the month.

Dec. 20: SSDI benefits are paid to beneficiaries with a birth date that falls between the 11th – 20th of the month. This group gets paid on Dec. 20, which is the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Dec. 27: If your birthday lands between the 21st – 31st, you can expect your payment on Dec. 27, which is the 4th Wednesday of the month.

Dec. 29 (early payment): This month, the January SSI payment will arrive early on Dec. 29, 2023. This is because Jan. 01, 2024 is a federal holiday, and there’s also a weekend to contend with. The January SSI payment will be paid on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 since that is the closest preceding business day.

While receiving a double December payment is a nice bonus, keep in mind that it also means you won’t receive any SSI payments during the month of January.

Receiving your benefit payments

Federal law mandates that SSDI and SSI payments are paid electronically. You can choose to receive your benefit payments in one of two ways:

  • Direct Deposit
  • Direct Express Debit Mastercard

Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is the safest and most convenient way to receive your SSDI or SSI payments. This option sends the money straight to your bank account. You can sign up online at Go Direct or by calling 1-800-333-1795.

You can also log in to your mySocialSecurity account and update your payment preferences. Once set up, the payment is automatically deposited into your account each month, and the money can be used that same day.

Direct Express Debit Card

You can also choose to receive your benefits through a Direct Express debit card. The card lets you access your benefits and use the money to shop, pay bills, or get cash.

The Direct Express Mastercard lets you access your benefit payments without needing a bank account. Your federal payment goes right into your card account, and your monthly funds are ready on the same day.

To sign up, call the Direct Express hotline at 1-800-333-1795. You will need to provide your date of birth, Social Security number, and SSDI/SSI claim number.

How to report a lost or missing payment

Social Security benefits are usually paid on time, but delays can occur – especially if you recently applied for benefits, or recently updated your personal information.

Delays can be caused by SSA staffing shortages or holidays, so it’s advised to wait three business days before contacting the SSA. The SSA will investigate and take steps to ensure you receive your payment.
