Cox Internet

Cox Communications has long been a coaxial cable company providing cable internet and TV services. However, as fiber internet becomes the future of home connectivity, they are beginning to roll out their own fiber network.

Right now, Cox’s fiber internet is limited to just a few fiber cities. However, while Cox’s main offering remains cable internet, its fiber network is growing. Depending on where you live, internet plans could be cable or fiber.

How fast is Cox broadband internet?

While fiber is capable of reaching multi-gig speeds, Cox cable internet can still reach fast speeds, up to 1 Gig download speed. However, fiber has much faster upload speeds than cable.

Cox Internet Plans

There are 4 different cable internet plans available to serve a range of internet usage demands and budgets. All Cox internet plans have a data cap of 1.25 TB per month.

Essential 10075 Mbps starting at $49.99/mo
Preferred 250200 Mbps starting at  $49.99/mo
Ultimate 500400 Mbps starting at $69.99/mo
Gigablast1000 Mbps starting at $99.99/mo

How much is Cox internet?

Cox internet plans start at $49.99 per month. At this price point, there are two plans to choose from: Essential 100 or Preferred 250.

Essential 100 – 100 Mbps | $49.99/mo

The Essential 100 plan gives you 100 Mbps download speed with 5 Mbps upload speed. It can support 3-5 simultaneous users and is a good option if you primarily use the internet for virtual learning, HD streaming, social networking, or operating smart home devices.

💥 The Essential 100 plan includes Panoramic Wi-Fi equipment for no extra cost. It is the only Cox internet plan with no annual contract requirement or cancellation fees.

Preferred 250 – 250 Mbps | $49.99/mo

Alternatively, there is the Preferred 250 plan. For the same monthly price as the Essential 100 plan, customers can opt for 250 Mbps download speed with 10 Mbps upload speed. But, there is a 1-year term agreement, and Panoramic Wi-Fi is not included.

You may want to opt for 250 Mbps if you have up to 7 people in your home that need to use the internet at the same time. It is a good choice for customers who work or learn from home, frequently videoconference, game, or stream HD videos.

The other two Cox internet plans are the Ultimate 500 and Gigablast plans. A contract is not required, though you will pay more per month.

Ultimate 500 – 500 Mbps | $69.99/mo

For $69.99 per month, a Cox customer can choose the Ultimate 500 plan which provides 500 Mbps download speeds with 10 Mbps upload speeds. This plan is great for moderate 4K streaming, heavy gaming, and working or learning from home. It can support up to 9 simultaneous users.

Gigablast – 1000 Mbps | $99.99/mo

Or, the Gigablast plan boasts super-fast 1 Gbps download speeds with 35 Mbps upload speeds. This highest-tier plan costs $99.99 per month. This plan can support a virtually unlimited number of simultaneous internet users and devices. Along with being the best option for avid gamers, 4K streaming on several devices, and multiple household members that work or learn online, the Gigablast plan is also perfect for ultra-connected homes with multiple smart home devices.

Data Cap

Does Cox have unlimited data?

All Cox internet plans have a 1.25 TB data cap. This is fairly difficult to go over for the average household. But, it is not impossible for especially active online households.

To give you an idea of exactly how much 1.25 TB of data is, you can use it to stream 10 hours of HD video, play 3 hours of online multiplayer games, browse the web for 9 hours, or video chat for 8 hours every day for a month.

👉 Cox internet customers are given a one-time courtesy credit for going over the data cap the first time.

After your courtesy credit is used, customers are automatically billed an extra $10 charge for 50 more gigabytes of data. If that is exceeded, the $10 charge for 50 GB continues until the customer reaches a maximum limit of $100.

If Cox customers need unlimited data, they have the option to pay an extra $40 per month to remove the data cap. There are ways to save on this charge by taking advantage of bundling options.

Add-ons

Unlimited data ($40 per month) is just one of the many add-on services Cox offers its internet customers.

For only $5 per month, customers can get the Contour Stream Player, which can be used to 4K stream your favorite movies and TV shows all from one place. It includes an award-winning voice remote, plus thousands of free programs.

Homelife Automation is available for $15 per month. This smart home service allows you to monitor and control your devices when you are away via your smartphone.

Advanced Tech Support can be purchased for $10 per month. It includes 24/7 professional remote help and in-home tech support visits.

StraightUp Internet (Prepaid)

Along with its standard internet plans, Cox has a prepaid cable internet option called StraightUp Internet. It is a pay-as-you-go internet service with no contract.

StraightUp Internet gives you internet speeds up to 100 Mbps for the fixed monthly price of $50. A modem and router or gateway are included for no extra cost. There are no installation, equipment rental, or hidden fees.

Just like with all other Cox internet plans, there is a 1.25 TB data cap. With StraightUp Internet, you choose when you want to recharge your account on a month-to-month basis.

👉 Tip: Pause your service anytime simply by not recharging your account for the next month.

To recharge your StraightUp Internet service, you can log in to your account online and pay with your credit or debit card. Or, you can enroll online for automatic payments.

You can also opt in to pay via text messages. Another option is to contact Cox directly, or visit a Cox store location to recharge your service.

Affordable Connectivity Program

Cox is partnered with the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal government assistance initiative that helps low-income families afford high-speed internet. Through the ACP, eligible households can receive up to $30 off their monthly internet bill (or $75 if living on qualifying tribal lands.)

To qualify for discounted internet through the ACP, at least one member of your household must meet one or more of these eligibility requirements:

  • Qualifies for the Lifeline benefit, meaning being enrolled in a federal program like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit, or Tribal Programs for Residents for Qualifying Tribal Lands
  • Income is at or less than 200% of federal poverty guidelines
  • Takes part in the free and reduced school lunch or breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision
  • Received a Pell Grant for the current year

There are two discounted internet plans that Cox offers for customers who qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program.

ConnectAssist is a low-cost internet plan for individuals receiving government assistance. Internet speed is limited to 50 Mbps download speed/ 3 Mbps upload speed. It costs $30 per month, so combined with the ACP credit, eligible customers can get this plan for entirely free.

The Connect2Compete plan is for families who receive government assistance and have at least one K-12 child. This package includes 100 Mbps download speed, a WiFi modem, and EasyConnect self-install. It costs only $9.95 per month, so it’s entirely free when combined with the ACP benefit.

The ACP benefit can also be applied to Cox’s StraightUp prepaid internet plan, which typically costs $50 per month for 100 Mbps download speeds. ACP customers can get this plan for only $20 per month (or free if living on tribal lands.).

Cox offers an advanced gateway called Panoramic WiFi. This cutting-edge combination cable modem router reduces interference in the home and provides a very strong WiFi signal. It delivers a better internet usage experience by automatically selecting the best WiFi frequencies for streaming, browsing the web, and sharing files.

🛡️ Advanced Security is an extra layer of internet security that is included with Panoramic WiFi.

Features of Advanced Security include prevention of cyberattacks by letting you know when you are visiting a malicious website or a potential victim of phishing, blocking unknown connections, and 24/7 scanning for threats with alerts if any are detected. It can be switched on through the Panoramic WiFi app.

Elite Gamer also includes a dashboard that allows you to monitor real-time gaming connection quality, improvements, and previous online gaming session details.

The Panoramic WiFi app gives you enhanced functionality over your home WiFi network. It can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the Apple App Store. From the app, you can manage your WiFi network and connections in a variety of ways. For example, you can control WiFi settings, manage your network, name devices connected to your home network, turn on Advanced Security features, and monitor how much data each device on your network is using.

Cox WiFi Hotspots

Cox internet customers gain access to millions of WiFi hotspots throughout the United States. Currently, free WiFi is available at 4 million locations across the country. Oliver

Customers can also log in to their account to manage their Cox services and get technical support.

Cox App

The Cox app can be used to get support, manage your account, pay bills, change plans, perform speed tests, check for service outages, and more. It is available for Cox customers to download for free from the Google Play or Apple App Store.

Using the Cox app requires that you sign in with your account. However, after the first time signing in, you can use Face ID or fingerprint recognition.

The first time you open the Cox app, Cox will run a network check on your services using the Smart Help troubleshooting feature. If it detects any issues with your services, you can immediately get help for those problems.

The Cox app also makes installing Panoramic WiFi a breeze. Just use the Easy Connect feature to start setting up your home’s WiFi from your mobile device.

How To Cancel Cox

To cancel your Cox services, call 1-800-234-3993. You will only be billed for the partial month of services that you used. So, if you disconnect before the end of your billing cycle, you will not be charged for the entire cycle.

You must return all equipment by either dropping it off at a Cox store location or shipping it. Keep in mind that most Cox plans have an annual contract. So, there may be cancellation fees if you cancel services before the term is up.

Alternatively, if you are moving, there is an option to transfer your current Cox services to your new address. Visit the Cox Move page and fill out the required fields to see service availability in your new location. If your Cox services are available, then you can transfer your services over to your new address, bring all your Cox equipment with you on the move, and either install it yourself or get professional installation when you settle into your new home.

If you wish to pause your services for a time or only use Cox for part of the year, you may also want to look into the Cox Seasonal program. This program allows you to pause your services for a minimum of 30 days up to a maximum of 9 months, up to twice per year, without having to uninstall or reinstall equipment.

Is Cox Right for Me?

Without a doubt, Cox Communications is one of the best cable internet providers in the nation. The company has a long history as one of the most reliable, reputable, and well-recognized names in the cable internet industry.

You should certainly consider choosing Cox as your ISP, especially if Cox Fiber is available in your area. Since fiber is the future, you may want to check first to see if fiber internet is available from Cox or another internet provider at your location.

If fiber internet isn’t an option where you live right now, then Cox cable internet is still a solid choice. The company’s cable network is even more reliable than 5G home internet and still capable of reaching Gig speeds.

⚡ Enjoy wall-to-wall coverage through Panoramic WiFi, free equipment upgrades, and over four million WiFi hotspots to keep you connected on the go.

However, Cox is on the pricier side of cable internet providers. While their bundling options do make Cox internet more affordable, you can get faster speeds for much lower prices with some other ISPs.

For instance, at $49.99 per month, you can get up to 250 Mbps download speeds with Cox. For a similar price with other cable internet providers, like Mediacom or Xfinity, you can get 600-800 Mbps download speeds.

Another drawback is that most Cox internet plans require a 12-month contract or you’ll have to pay more. If you want more flexibility, then you may want to look at prepaid options like StraightUp.

Deciding whether to sign up for Cox comes down to which internet providers are available in your area, along with your own internet usage needs and budget.

Take some time to compare Cox with other internet providers in your area. Luckily, our thorough fiber and cable internet provider reviews have compiled all the research you need to help you find the best ISP for your household. Be sure to check them out to discover which is the perfect fit for your home.
